Explore Golden Temple

The Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib, is a revered and significant religious site for Sikhs around the world. Located in Amritsar, Punjab, India, it is the holiest Gurdwara and an essential pilgrimage site for followers of Sikhism.

Constructed in the 16th century, the Golden Temple was founded by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru, and completed by Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru. Its architecture is a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles, reflecting the inclusive nature of Sikhism.

The temple’s lower floors are made of marble, while the upper floors are covered in real gold, giving it the name “Golden Temple.” The central structure, surrounded by a large sarovar (holy tank), represents the spiritual and cultural center of Sikhism.

The Golden Temple serves as a place of worship, community gathering, and spiritual reflection. The langar, a community kitchen providing free meals to all visitors regardless of background, is a prominent aspect that demonstrates the principle of equality and service in Sikhism.

Every day, thousands of devotees from various backgrounds visit the Golden Temple to pay their respects, seek spiritual solace, and partake in the langar. The temple exemplifies the core Sikh values of equality, service, and devotion to God.
