Delhi’s history is extensive, spanning thousands of years. Numerous dynasties and empires have called it home, notably the British Raj, the Delhi Sultanate, and the Mughals. The city has had many distinct rulers and has at various times been the epicenter of political, cultural, and economic activity.

Geographically, Delhi is located in northern India and is bounded to the east on three sides by the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The eastern section of the city is traversed by the Yamuna River.
